Total Muse

katespade

Guys, I think I’m in love. Fashion label Kate Spade is surely nothing new for fellow fashionistas; But I feel now, more than ever, that my dream life would be outfitted completely in the brand. Kate’s punchy, preppy, and colorful designs are as irresistible as candy- but with a sophisticated edge.

From the apparent lack of posts, you can probably tell that work has been taking over my life here in NYC. Things can get a pretty stressful by the end of the week but, thankfully, the city offers a few carefully manicured retreats (and I’m not just talking Central Park!). The vast and tranquil grounds at Brooklyn Botanical Garden are open almost every day of the week with discounted $5 tickets for students. Just steps from busy bridged borough (990 Washington Ave.), it’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon walking, napping, and getting back to nature. So I pulled on some flats and a comfy weekend outfit to make the trek.

Love List

I always make sure to start a long day of work with a hearty breakfast. Bananas & peanut butter, mini wheats, greek yogurt, etc. But this month I’ve been super into a new morning treat: Overnight Oats. Oatmeal is a delicious and healthy breakfast option, in my opinion, but not always palpable on hot summer mornings. This oatmeal recipe allows you to refrigerate the mixture overnight so you are left with a pre-made, delicious bowl of cold oats in the morning. And the best part- it keeps you full for SO LONG, so you can tackle the day with lasting energy!

Living on the edge of Tibeca means a walkable distance to the Hudson. Sail boats, mini golf, lounge chairs, and telescopes on the dock… this local is perfect for watching a summer sunset and just screams JCrew when it comes to style! So when I found these slightly nautical looking polka dot pants at Forever 21 last week, I knew exactly where to wear them. But I think the preppy ensemble would be perfect for work as well.

Bows (in any fashion) are another addition to my lengthy beautifull-but-not-necessarilly-usefull-or-practical list of obsessions. They say “I’m conformable with my femininity and don’t take it all too seriously,” and imply that you may be British or like reading classic novels and riding old fashioned bicycles (think Zooey Deschanel). There are so many very polished ways to wear these charming little accessories. Glamour magazine gives us some hairstyle options here (courtesy of Pinterest, of course). How do you bow? Gloss Boss

I love a good strong lip color, and the summer months are the perfect time to test out bright new shades. Some people tend to stray away from lipstick because it feels old, heavy, or outdated. Yet modern cosmetics have offered us some perfect solutions- lip stains, gloss balms, and everything in between! I’m currently loving this much-raved-about line from Revlon. The color I used here is Revlon Just Bitten Kissable balm stain in Smitten. It’s the perfect blue-toned pop of fuchsia for summer months. And I love the consistency of this product- a quick to apply lipstick and gloss all in one that stays on for ages!

So I’ve finally made it to NYC, and I couldn’t be more excited. Since I don’t start my internship till next Monday, this week has been full of sight seeing, restaurant hopping, and all other kinds of general exploration. The walking part is exhausting, but it’s worth it knowing that I’ve already found quite a few treasures I’m sure to return to throughout the summer. I have a serious weakness for bake shops, coffee houses- particularly anywhere that sells sweets! One of my new favorites is Billy’s Bakery.

Lately, I’ve been accumulating mass amounts of printed floral dresses. I daresay they are my favorite article of clothing for day-to-day wear. Florals are the epitome of femininity but, depending on the type of print, have the ability to look retro and modern at the same time. Dress them up, dress them down- these easy pieces add flirty flare to any spring or summer outfit. Here, I decided to pair more masculine pieces (oversize blazer and sneakers) with the dress to give it a cool yet casual vibe. Perfect for a low key workplace or an afternoon lunch date.

Intern Savvy

IMG_9936_flat

As I look to start my internship at Teen Vogue this summer, I’ve been reflecting a little on how in the world I managed to pull of what seemed like a near impossible feat a year ago: scoring an internship. Yes, starting at the bottom of the editorial food chain in an unpaid position isn’t exactly as glamourous as it may seem, but getting your foot in the door is everything. The frustrating thing about the magazine industry is that there’s a lot you learn via trial and error, word of mouth, and sheer connections. As a self proclaimed rookie, I’m fairly certain I don’t even know the half of it. But I have made it my mission to collect every tidbit of advice on the subject throughout my years in journalism school.

Here are a few tips based on what I’ve learned so far…

Accessories are tricky. They can make or break an outfit at the drop of a hat (or chunky bangle), but they also have amazing transformative power. I’m a big fan of versatility when it comes to work outfits, and I believe that a few accessory swaps can totally change a work day outfit into a stylish little night out ensemble. Check out what I did here with a plain white peplum top and pencil skirt. Uptown to Downtown in a flash!
